Ortel repositions management

Ortel Corp. (Alhambra, CA) has repositioned its management team to refine its overall organization. George Holmes has been promoted to vice president of worldwide sales, Bill Moore has been appointed general manager of the broadband communications sector, John Rinks has been promoted to vice president and general manager of the company`s satellite communications/ government business sector, Norman Kwong has been appointed general manager of the telecommunications business sector, and Larry Stark, vice president, will spearhead the company`s worldwide strategic marketing activities.

The Laser Institute of America (San Diego, CA) has named three officers and ten board members. Terry Feeley has been appointed president-elect of the organization. He co-founded Laser Fare in 1977 and served as its president and chief executive until 1993. Jyoti Mazumder has been named secretary of the Laser Institute. He is the Robert H. Lurie professor of engineering in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and the director of the Center for Laser Aided Intelligent Manufacturing. Mazumder has published more than 205 papers and edited or co-edited nine books on laser-related research. Florence Oreiro has been elected treasurer of the organization. Recently promoted to vice president of sales and marketing at PennWell Media Online (Boca Raton, FL), Oreiro was group publisher of PennWell`s Optoelectronics Group, based in Nashua, NH, since 1995 and was responsible for all publishing operations for Laser Focus World, Industrial Laser Review, and many other publications generated by her group. The ten board members include Jordan Bajor, Eckhard Beyer, Paul Denney, Larry Dosser, Walt Duley, Craig Friedrich, William Latham, William Lawson, Dewey Sprague, and Robert Weiner.

Qwest (Denver, CO) has appointed eight people to key technical management positions. Joining the management team are Bill Krause (director of ain product management), Michael Henigar (vice president of network services), Mike Wagner (program manager for new product development), Timothy D. Smith (executive director of strategy and planning of information systems), Dana L. Filip (vice president of network engineering), Jeff Schumacher (vice president of strategic applications), David Bartlett (vice president of systems architecture) and Ahmet K. Corapcioglu (executive director of infrastructure in information technology).

John Dickson has been named president of Lucent Technologies` Microelectronics Group (Murray Hill, NJ). He was vice president of the Integrated Circuits Div. of the group before being named chief operating officer late last year. Dickson spent 14 years with Texas Instruments, holding management positions in its Semiconductor and Consumer Products Div. in the United Kingdom and France. Former employers include icl plc, shographics Inc., and Headland Technology. Richard McGinn has been appointed chairman of Lucent Technologies. He was president of the company since its inception and was named chief executive in October 1997. He has more than 28 years` experience in the communications systems and technology industry.

Frank Chiaino has been named president and chief executive officer of FiberNet Telecom Group Inc. (Rochester, NY). Most recently, he served as president and ceo of Time Warner Communications, where he worked for 30 years. Previously, he served as vice president and ceo of Time Inc.`s Manhattan Cable subsidiary, where he built and managed the nation`s first urban cable system.

Jimmy Tan has been named vice president and general manager for the activities of Tellabs (Lisle, IL) in the Asia Pacific region, with headquarters in Singapore. Tan gained 19 years of experience at Hewlett-Packard in general management, marketing, sales business development and engineering positions, all in the Asia Pacific region. For the past six years, Tan was general manager for Hewlett-Packard`s test and measurement organization in the South Asia Pacific region, which includes Australia, New Zealand, and the Indian subcontinent.

Mark Borman has been named vice president, investor relations of adc Telecommunications Inc. (Minneapolis, MN). He will be responsible for financial communications and relations within the investment community. Borman was previously vice president, investor relations of General Instrument Corp. Borman was also named among the best investor relations officers by Institutional Investor`s All-American Research Team.

Jim Wiemer has been appointed director of marketing--new business development for reltec Corp.`s Custom Design Telephone Systems Inc. (North Ridgeville, OH). Wiemer will be responsible for expanding cdts`s business, particularly in the multi-dwelling unit market segment, and for coordinating marketing programs. He has been with reltec since 1989.

Lawrence E. Sarjeant has joined the Legal and Regulatory Department of the United States Telephone Association (Washington, DC) as senior counsel, legal and regulatory affairs. He will be working on issues before the Federal Communications Commission of significance to usta`s member companies. Sarjeant brings 15 years of telecommunications experience, including 11 years with US West, where he was vice president of federal regulatory.

Tingye Li has been appointed to the Board of Directors of afo (Fremont, CA). He will serve as chair of the board`s scientific advisory committee. Li was one of the first to conceptualize and advocate the dense wavelength-division multiplexer (dwdm) approach to expanding bandwidth. He is currently a division manager of the Communications Infrastructure Research Laboratory of at&t Labs, Red Bank, NJ. Among several awards Li has received are the ieee 1975 w.r.g. Baker Prize, the ieee 1979 David Sarnoff Award, the osa/ieee 1995 John Tyndall Award, the osa 1997 Ives Medal/Quinn Endowment, and an at&t 1997 Science and Technology Medal.

David A. McNally has been appointed vice president and general manager of Fiber Imaging Technologies Inc. (Worcester, MA), a subsidiary of Luxtec. In his new position, he will direct the design, fabrication, and oem supplier relationships of specialty and micro-optical systems that address the need in surgery for miniturization of imaging and illumination for minimally invasive procedures. A 20-year medical device profession with expertise in endoscopes, fiber-optics, and optical systems, McNally worked most recently as a marketing consultant to Luxtec and the medical device industry.

Roy Wilkens, founder and former ceo of WilTel, has joined the board of directors of Qwest (Denver, CO). Wilkens was president of Williams Pipeline Co. when he founded WilTel as an operating unit of The Williams Companies Inc. in 1985. In 1992, he was appointed by President George Bush to the National Security Telecommunications Advisory Council.

Ian Chambers has been named executive vice president and chief operating officer of Fiber Options Inc., (Bohemia, NY). He has more than 23 years` experience in the surveillance industry, having previously served as director of closed circuit television marketing for Sensormatic Electronics Corp. Chambers will be responsible for sales, marketing, accounting, and manufacturing operations.

Jerry Benedetto has been named chief financial officer of Metromedia Fiber Network Inc. (New York City). He has worked for various Metromedia companies for more than 14 years. Before joining Metromedia Fiber Network, Benedetto served as chief accounting officer for two and a half years at Metromedia International Telecommunications Inc. He has also served as chief financial officer at Metromedia Communications Corp. and Metromedia Restaurant Group. Vincent A. Galluccio has been named president of International Optical Network, llc, a joint venture between Metromedia Fiber Network Inc. and Racal Telecom. He will continue in his present role as senior vice president and a member of the Board of Directors of Metromedia Fiber Network. Galluccio spent 25 years with British Telecommunications Plc. and International Business Machines Corp.

Lynn Hutcheson has joined c-cor Electronics Inc. (State College, PA) as vice president of engineering and technology. Hutcheson will direct all functional units, including AM fiber, RF, network management, the Technology Center, mechanical engineering, documentation and control, PC design, and cad drafting. Previously, Hutcheson was vice president of engineering at adc Broadband Communications.

At the annual board election of the Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers on March 28, the following members were elected to the Board of Directors: Ron Hranac (Coaxial International), at-large director, representing the entire membership; Norrie Bush (TCI of Southern Washington), region 3 director, representing Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington; Jim Wood (PPC), region 4 director, representing Oklahoma and Texas, Larry Stiffelman (CommScope Inc.), region 5 director, representing Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, and Nebraska; James Kuhns (Comcast Cablevision), region 7 director, representing Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio; Don Shackleford (Time Warner Cable), region 8 director, representing Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee; Wes Burton (MediaOne), region 10 director, representing Kentucky, North Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia; and John Vartanian (Viewer`s Choice), region 12 director, representing Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island, and Vermont.

Albrecht Wandel, managing partner and chairman of the board of directors at Wandel & Goltermann Management Holding GmbH (Eningen, Germany), has decided to leave the board of directors and assume leadership of the supervisory board. Wandel served on the board of directors for almost 24 years. Peter Wagner will assume the role of chairman of the board of directors. Wagner became a managing director of the company in 1995 and was responsible for marketing and sales. He has been in charge of Wandel & Goltermann`s operative business since 1996.

Barbara A. Pierce has been appointed marketing communications manager of anadigics Inc. (Warren, NJ). Most recently, Pierce had served as marketing and business development manager at OpenCon Systems. She will be responsible for all marketing communications efforts, including advertising and public relations, at anadigics.

Jack M. Scanlon has been named chief executive officer of Global Crossing Ltd. (Beverly Hills, CA). Prior to his appointment, Scanlon was president and general manager of the Cellular Networks and Space Sector of Motorola Inc. He also spent 24 years with AT&T and Bell Laboratories, rising to vice president and general manager of Network Systems at AT&T.

Alan J. Wiersema has been named manager of applications engineering at the Ripley Co. (Cromwell, CT). Wiersema will provide technical information and training to customers, distributors, and sales representatives. He has more than 25 years of operations and engineering experience in the cable television and electrical industries.

Donald A. Gutierrez has been elected corporate vice president of Lamson & Sessions (Cleveland, OH). Gutierrez will serve as vice president of the newly formed Lamson business unit Carlon, which is a result of a merger between Carlon Electrical Products and Carlon Telecom Systems. Previously, as vice president of Carlon Electrical Products, Gutierrez was responsible for the overall performance of the business unit.

Kenneth L. Molinelli has been named vice president of quality--North America at RELTEC Corp. (Cleveland, OH). He will be responsible for conceptualizing, implementing, and maintaining strategies in product design, software development, product documentation, manufacturing, and services. Previously, Molinelli served as director of process support at Harman International Industries. Also, Mark A. McDonald has been appointed vice president, advanced network market development--North America. He will be responsible for focusing on the non-telecommunications deployment of advanced network architectures that support business and commercial delivery of voice, video, and data services. Prior to his appointment, McDonald worked at DSC Communications Corp.

Peter Ballantyne has been appointed vice president of engineering at Bookham Technology (Oxfordshire, UK). Ballantyne worked on the development of electronic beam lithography for integrated circuit mask fabrication at Bell Labs, he ran AT&T`s global fiber operation for two years and has been responsible for developing new broadband multimedia business opportunities for AT&T`s global fiber network. W. Arthur "Skip" Porter has been named a non-executive director at Bookham. Porter, who is president and CEO of the Houston Advance Research Centers, was a part of the Texas Instruments team that developed the first fully automated system used in manufacturing integrated circuits. He is a fellow of the IEEE and a recipient of the IEEE Centennial Medal for extraordinary achievement.

Rich Yalen has been named chief executive officer of Cable & Wireless Inc. (Vienna, VA). Yalen, who previously served as chief operating officer, held the additional post of interim CEO since the retirement of Alan Peyser at the end of December 1997. Yalen has more than 25 years` experience in domestic and international communications. In six years with CWI, he has been responsible for the marketing, customer satisfaction, and business development units, and also launched the company`s specialized calling service business unit.

Charles B. Harrison has been appointed president and chief executive officer of SpecTran Corp. (Sturbridge, MA). Harrison served as a director of the company since July 1997. Previously, he served as an engineering and management consultant for Rockwell International. He succeeds Raymond E. Jaeger, who will remain chairman of the board.

Mansoor Saifi has been appointed senior vice president, technology and business development, of Sterlite Optical Fibre`s manufacturing unit in Aurangabad, India. Previously, Saifi was executive director of research and development for Communication Fiber Technologies and Spectran Specialty Optics.
