Essient Photonics has announced $7 million in its first round of funding, led by Pond Ventures. The company supplies integrated III-V optoelectronic components for modulation and detection in 10- and 40-Gbit/sec systems.

According to the company, its products demonstrate significant reductions in physical size and power requirements. Its products uses drive voltages of just 100 mV. And by shrinking the size of components and eliminating others, Essient's technology platform affords engineers greater design flexibility, enabling them to use space in a new way, say company representatives.

"Our strong ability to offer a fraction of today's power usage coupled with our focus on integration will initiate simplified design concepts and lead to the pragmatic development of new markets for service providers and their suppliers," contends Dr. Simon Hicks, chief technology officer. "Further, by employing a fables model we can focus our resources on designing the best components for our customers' products."

The funding will be used to support the manufacture of the company's prototype integrated components.
