8 July 2003 Nashua NH Lightwave -- Lightwave magazine, published by PennWell Corporation for the global fiber optics market, launched a Russian-language edition in June in cooperation with High Technology Publishers Ltd. of Moscow. Lightwave Russian Edition will appear quarterly with an initial controlled circulation of over 4,000 qualified subscribers in the Russian telecommunications industry.
Lightwave also publishes a pan-European edition, Lightwave Europe, in London and a Chinese-language edition, Lightwave China, in Hong Kong for the mainland China market. Including the new Russian edition, the four separate Lightwave editions will reach over 70,000 managers and engineers in the fiber-optics industry worldwide.
"We are pleased to be able to work with High Technology Publishers to launch this Russian-language edition," said David Janoff, senior vice president of PennWell's Advanced Technology Division (Nashua, NH). "The optical fiber market in Russia is expected to grow about 20% from about 680,000 kilometers of raw fiber to about 900,000 kilometers in 2004. We anticipate that Lightwave Russian Edition will play an important role in the development of this market, in part by introducing overseas technology and products to network operators, equipment providers, and distributors in the Russia Federation."
The first issue of Lightwave Russian Edition was published on June 20, 2003, in Moscow with a controlled circulation of more than 4,000 fiber-optics managers and engineers in the telecommunications industry. The circulation is expected to rise to more than 5,000 by year end in Russia, the Ukraine, Belarus, Kazakhstan and other independent countries of the former Soviet Union. Additional copies will be distributed at leading telecommunications trade shows in Russia, including InfoComm in Moscow on September 9-13.
Dr. Oleg Nanii, the editor of Lightwave Russian Edition, said that the magazine will carry locally written articles, in addition to articles translated from the U.S. edition of Lightwave. "Our goal is to produce a quarterly magazine that provides accurate, up-to-date news, and technical information about cutting-edge developments in the industry, plus longer, analytical feature articles; tutorials and reference materials; articles about management and marketing expertise; and new products," Dr.Nanii said. The first issue is 56 pages.
