BTI Systems intros packet optical edge platform

MARCH 4, 2008 -- Purpose-built for service provider edge and enterprise networks, the BTI 7000 Series delivers HD Video, LAN and storage extension, SONET/SDH network consolidation, Ethernet business services, and 4G wireless backhaul capabilities without the high costs associated with traditional metro optical and Ethernet switching technologies, say company representatives.

MARCH 4, 2008 -- BTI Systems (search for BTI Systems) today unveiled its new packet optical edge platform, the BTI 7000 Series. Purpose-built for service provider edge and enterprise networks, the BTI 7000 Series delivers HD Video, LAN and storage extension, SONET/SDH network consolidation, Ethernet business services, and 4G wireless backhaul capabilities without the high costs associated with traditional metro optical and Ethernet switching technologies, say company representatives.

BTI says the 7000 Series builds on its expertise in delivering equipment for the optical edge; it combines carrier-grade reliability, compact size, and low-power consumption for the delivery of wavelengths, multi-protocol transport, and packet services in a single platform. With support for CWDM, DWDM, OTN, and Carrier Ethernet, combined with a rich set of transponders and muxponders, BTI claims it is providing a complete offering for extending multi-protocol Gigabit services within existing budgets to the optical edge.

"Packet Optical will be the fastest growing segment in optical transport over the next five years, increasing from $140 million in 2008 to a $2.8 billion market in 2012," reports Sterling Perrin, senior analyst with Heavy Reading. "Much of this transition in metro optical is driven by the need for more efficient products and technologies for transporting video services. We believe the ability to scale video out to the edge will be a key requirement for service providers," he notes.

With three new low-power shelf options--including the stackable 2-RU BTI 7060, 1-RU BTI 7030, and passive shelf BTI 7020--the BTI 7000 Series will support all existing modules from its Netstender product line and introduce new service capabilities including:

• Integrated Packet Service Modules--packetVX--with resilient sub-50/msec protection;
• Twelve- and 24-port modules with Ethernet Business Services capabilities;
• Hardware-based video processing offloading central servers and routers to deliver consistent quality of experience (QoE) and scaleable delivery of HD video at the edge;
• Ten-port Multi-protocol muxponder for Ethernet, storage, and SONET/SDH transport with integrated ring resiliency, supporting services from 100 Mbits/sec to 10 Gbits/sec;
• Dual 10G Multi-protocol transponder, i.e., high-density pluggable transponders delivering up to twelve 10G wavelengths in a 2-RU footprint;
• OTN support for intelligent service aggregation, in-band management, high-performance Forward Error Correction (FEC), and network interoperability;
• Low first-in-cost and pay-as-you-grow scalability from 1 Gbit/sec to 400 Gbits/sec;
• Outside plant operating temperature support for -20 ° C to +65 ° C
• Ability to scale up to 16-channel CWDM or 32-channel DWDM plus hybrid WDM options;
• Integrated AC power option; and
• In-service upgrade capabilities for current Netstender products.

"By closely coupling OTN and the optical layer with a packet engine, we are able to dramatically reduce the number of systems, provisioning complexity, and power traditionally required at the Edge," contends Jean-Charles Fahmy, vice president of product management at BTI Systems. "The 7000 Series offers a way to improve overall network capacity and services scalability to ensure competitive operators can deliver the next class of packet services within existing budgets," he says.
