Huawei deploys 1,141-km 40-Gbit/sec commerical network

MAY 29, 2008 -- Built for Russian fixed telecom carrier TransTeleCom (TTC), the 1,141-km network connects Moscow and St. Petersburg and requires no electric regeneration, say Huawei representatives.

MAY 29, 2008 -- Huawei Technologies (search for Huawei) today announced that it has successfully deployed what it claims is the industry's longest 40G (search for 40G) commercial transport network. Built for TransTeleCom (TTC), a top-three fixed telecom carrier in Russia, the 1,141-km network connects Moscow and St. Petersburg and requires no electric regeneration.

The network uses Huawei's patented SuperWDM technologies to achieve ultra-long haul transmission without electrical regeneration at distances of over 1,500 km. Huawei says its patented C-band extension technology can help operators increase their fiber transmission bandwidth by an extra 20%, making it the only vendor with a transmission capacity of 3.84 Tbits/sec, which it claims is the largest in the industry.

Furthermore, Huawei's 40G transport can be upgraded from 10G to 40G without any platform replacement, say company representatives, providing new services 75% faster than previously possible.

"Even today, telecom operators are faced with the problem of having insufficient capacity on their backbone transport networks," reports Evgeniy Zhukov, head of optical network group of Huawei products and solutions department. "Presently the most viable solution is the 40G transfer technologies, which can increase the capacity and efficiency of existing DWDM systems. Huawei is the first company in Russia to demonstrate the operability of 40G technologies in real networks," he says.

"By 2009, all TransTeleCom's DWDM backbones will be updated to 40G transfer per wavelength," adds Andrei Pavlov, senior vice president, head of TTC technical development department. "It is a natural stage of backbone development, which is necessary to satisfy the constantly growing demand for bandwidth. Thanks to Huawei's advanced DWDM equipment, 40G channels can be activated quickly without restructuring the existing network."

TransTeleCom operates and services the largest fiber network in Russia, which is more than 55,000-km long and has the bandwidth capability of 50 Gbits/sec. The network is laid along the country's railways, has more than 1,000 access nodes in all regions of Russia, and connects Europe and Asia.
