JULY 24, 2008 -- The 17th Annual International Conference on Plastic Optical Fiber, POF 2008, will be held at the Santa Clara Convention Center August 25-28. The event consists of a tutorial day on Aug 25, followed by conference and exhibition programs on Aug 26-28.

A pre-conference workshop on "Designing with POF" will be held August 20-22, also at the convention center.

Information Gatekeepers Inc. (IGI; search for Information Gatekeepers), a Boston-based conference and show organizer as well as consultancy in the telecommunications field, is organizing the event. The conference program will cover a variety of POF applications, from race cars to home networks and active optical cables. It will also highlight technological advances that promise to improve POF performance and broaden its appeal.

The use of POF in active optical cables is a particularly interesting market, says IGI. Such cables are targeted primarily at computer, data center, and signage applications as alternatives to bulkier and more bandwidth constraining copper and coax cables. According to its recent report, "The Market for Active Optical Cables," IGI Consulting expects the space will grow to a billion dollars by 2012 from practically zero in 2007. (See also Lightwave's recent article on these cables.)

The conference will feature three speakers who will address the role of POF in this growing space. Stan Swirhun, Zarlink, will deliver "POF Opportunities in Active Optical Cables"; consultant and ex-Intel staffer Tom Rossi will present " Active Optical Cables: Ripe for Rapid Market Expansion"; and Dana DuToit of POF developer Chromis Optical Fiber will speak on "GigaPOF and Active Optical Cables."
