OTEGLOBE taps Infinera for Pan-European network

JANUARY 30, 2009 -- OTEGLOBE, the international division of Greek incumbent national carrier OTE, has selected Infinera (search for Infinera) for its 7,000-km Transbalkan Network.

OTEGLOBE launched its Transbalkan Network (TBN) last year to connect Greece and the Balkans with central Europe and western Europe. With a unique geographical position between the Middle East and Europe, OTEGLOBE needed a fully protected, highly reliable, next-generation network to provide international wholesale telecom services to other telecom operators and large enterprises in southeastern Europe and beyond, say OTEGLOBE representatives.

OTEGLOBE has been experiencing a rapid increase in IP traffic, driven mainly by European customers and a growing volume of Middle Eastern business as broadband penetration continues to increase rapidly in the region. OTEGLOBE says it selected Infinera for its 7,000-km Transbalkan Network because Infinera's digital architecture delivers the speed and scalability to accommodate rapid demand growth combined with the manageability and flexibility to accommodate many different services in a single platform. Infinera's large-scale photonic integrated circuits enable its system to support large, scalable networks while at the same time delivering economies in space, power, and ease of operation.

"Strategically, the Transbalkan Network is core to our data and capacity business and is aiming to reinforce OTEGLOBE's vision of essentially becoming the bridge connecting the Middle East with Europe through the Balkans," explains P. Bosdogianni, technology director of OTEGLOBE. "We needed to have a reliable, fully protected terrestrial network with the ability to turn up services quickly, as an alternative route to our existing sub-sea network through Italy. Our analysis showed that speed, flexibility, and reliability came though integration. Infinera met our requirements," she adds, "and we were glad to select Infinera for the deployment of our Transbalkan Network."

According to Infinera, its DTN is a Digital ROADM for long-haul and metro core networks, combining high-capacity DWDM transport, integrated digital bandwidth management, and GMPLS-powered service intelligence in a single platform.
