Santur delivers tunable lasers with InP modulators for applications up to 12 Gbps

MARCH 23, 2009 -- Santur offers MEMS-based tunable transmitters that are 45% smaller and consume 40% less power than conventional designs.

MARCH 23, 2009 -- Santur Corp. (search Lightwave for Santur), a provider focused on integrated III-V solutions for the telecom industry, has announced the general availability of full C-band tunable transmitters (TLMZ).

The transmitters contain the company's DFB laser array coupled with its indium phosphide (InP) Mach-Zehnder modulator through prorietary MEMs technology. Santur has successfully completed Telcordia qualification of the devices and has begun production. According to the manufacturer, the scalable design of TLMZ enables the rapid migration of traditional designs based on CW lasers and discrete lithium niobate (LiNbO3)modulators to the smaller and cost-effective TLMZ.

The transmitter offers 45% smaller footprint and 30% lower power dissipation while delivering performance equivalent to discrete solutions based on tunable CW lasers and discrete small-form-factor LiNbO3 modulators. "The commercial deployment of our new state-of-the-art InP Mach-Zehnder modulator with our flagship tunable laser represents a major milestone on Santur's product roadmap to deliver compact tunable transmitters to the marketplace," says Milind Gokhale, vice president of technology and development at Santur.

Santur is supplying customers with devices rated up to 4 dBm optical power with both zero and negative chirp modulators and available in butterfly or module form factors. "This is a particularly significant step for our industry because these devices enable rapid adoption of tunability in metro markets," says Paul Meissner, CEO of Santur. "In addition to providing the standard precalibrated modules with electronics, the simplicity of our tunable laser technology also allows our customers to buy at the lower-cost butterfly level."
