MARCH 19, 2010 -- ColorChip has announced the availability of what it touts as the industry's first QSFP 40G pluggable LR transceiver. An alternative to CFP transceivers, ColorChip's DragonFly 40G is the smallest of its kind for ranges of up to 10 km, the company asserts.

The DragonFly 40G QSFP is a 4x10G hot-pluggable optical transceiver. ColorChip says its SystemOnGlass technology enables the integration of four transmitters, four receivers, and an optical mux/demux into a small form factor package that delivers a 40-Gbps data link in a QSFP footprint. The optical connectivity is based on two SMF LC connectors, one for Tx and one for Rx. The Tx and Rx each consist of four 10-Gbps CWDM channels, whose wavelengths are in the 1300-nm range.

Additional features include:

  • Compliant with 40G Ethernet IEEE 802.3ae 40GBASE-LR4 standards
  • Compliant with QDR/DDR Infiniband data rates
  • Hot pluggable electrical interface
  • Applications include Ethernet, InfiniBand, and Fibre Channel

ColorChip's DragonFly 40G QSFPs engineering samples will be available in July 2010 and general availability is expected by the end of the year. Engineering samples can be pre-ordered now through ColorChip's website.
