OCTOBER 19, 2010 -- Midcontinent Communications has deployed Infinera (Nasdaq: INFN) DTN Digital ROADM systems to support delivery of cable television, high-speed Internet, and telecom in its Upper Midwest service area, the systems providers says.

Independent cable company Midcontinent serves more than 250,000 customers in North Dakota, South Dakota, and Minnesota. Midcontinent operates a 4600 fiber-mile network delivering services to urban and rural areas within the three states.

Midcontinent deployed the Infinera DTN Digital ROADMs to help support rapid traffic growth due to an expanding offering of high-definition television channels, accelerating demand for Internet bandwidth, the move to IP technology for carrying television services between head-ends, and a growing enterprise business.

“We looked at a wide range of options and the Infinera technology was clearly superior,” said Midcontinent Vice-President of Technology Jon Pederson. “With our Internet traffic growing at 80% year-on-year and enterprise customers requesting services up to 10 Gbps, we could not afford to take months to add capacity. The Infinera system enables us to fulfill demands quickly and easily.”
