Juniper Networks and ADVA Optical Networking, who not only have a sales and marketing relationship but who have partnered for the first-generation optical interface on Juniper’s PTX Series Packet Transport Switch (see "PTX Series Packet Transport Switch starts Juniper Networks down packet-optical transport path"), say they have demonstrated the ability to automatically set up optical circuits between Juniper Networks routers via ADVA Optical Networking DWDM platforms. The demonstration, which used a common signaling protocol, took place across HEAnet, Ireland's national education and research network.

The HEAnet network consists of Juniper Networks MX Series 3D Universal Edge Routers and ADVA’s FSP 3000 DWDM equipment. These systems share a common GMPLS control plane. HEAnet staffers used that control plane to provision end–to-end circuits between the routers over the optical network. This provisioning happened automatically, ADVA and Juniper assert, in that the control plane enabled the initiating router to discover, reserve, and then build an optical circuit across the network without user intervention beyond the original commands on the initiating router.

“This is one of the first customer GMPLS interworking tests between router and optical equipment manufacturers,” said Eoin Kenny, project leader, HEAnet. “It demonstrates how an Internet service provider can use GMPLS to provision circuits automatically across its optical network from a router in one simple step.”
