SK Telecom, a mobile operator in Korea will soon quadruple its network capacity to 40 gigabits per second (40Gbps) transmission, and prepare its network for transition to 100G capacity in the future.

The operator has selected Nokia Siemens Networks’ 100G-ready optical network equipment for a cost-effective capacity expansion. The system uses dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM), where a number of different “colors” or wavelengths of light transports data down the same optical fiber, each carrying information at 40G.
“Korea is one of the most advanced broadband markets in the world, and is home to a vast number of growing smart device users. As data traffic continues to surge in this country, operators are considering plans for terabit optical transport networks or 100G,” says Paul Tyler, head of APAC region at Nokia Siemens Networks. “Nokia Siemens Networks has over 100 DWDM customers around the world and utilizes its technology leadership to ensure a superior end-user experience for SK Telecom customers.”
As part of the contract, Nokia Siemens Networks will deliver its hiT 7300 dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) platform to SK Telecom. Based on the CP-QPSK modulation format, the company’s coherent detection 40G transponder will use the operator‘s installed DWDM network infrastructure to transition to 40G line rate without the costly and time-consuming fiber measurement currently required by other systems.
