Sumitomo Electric Lightwave launches Quantum Fusion Splicer

Sumitomo Electric Lightwave (SEL) has unveiled the Quantum Type-Q101-CA Dual-Heater Core Alignment Fusion Splicer, the first in its Quantum Splicer product line. The new Quantum Splicer is designed to offer easier and faster splicing, expanded memory storage, improved ruggedness, and optimum splicing efficiencies in speed and performance, SEL says.

The new Quantum fusion splicer offers a fully functional touch-screen interface, which SEL asserts is an industry first that makes splicer function navigation more intuitive, faster, and easier than traditional keypad interfaces. However, the Quantum Splicer offers both interfaces to accommodate user preferences. SEL also says the Quantum is the  first splicer with an SD port for virtually unlimited data storage, plus the ability to download and upload work-related splicing project data, training videos, audio, and software.

Finally, SEL says the Quantum splicer is the smallest and lightest core-alignment fusion splicer available, measuring 4.72 (W) x 6.06 (D) x 4.96 (H) inches and weighing 4.4 lbs. However, it offers a 640x320 fiber view and what SEL also asserts is the longest electrode life available. It is designed to be resistant to shock, water, and dust as well.

The Quantum Splicer also features a user selectable fiber placement system, Li-ion battery, metal hood, and SEL’s standard dual-heater system, which has been upgraded with a 20 second reduction in combined splice and heater cycle time. The splicer is also compatible with the Lynx2 CustomFit Splice-On Connectors for customized, on-site cable builds and terminations.

The Quantum Splicer will be available in September 2011 and is targeted at the data center, enterprise network, FTTx, and outside plant work environments.
