Infinera: Hey, we updated the DTN, too

Sept. 19, 2011
Almost lost among the hoopla surrounding its introduction of the DTN-X packet-optical transport platform, Infinera (NASDAQ: INFN) also announced last Thursday that it has upgraded its flagship DTN platform with 40- and 100-Gbps capabilities.

Almost lost among the hoopla surrounding its introduction of the DTN-X packet-optical transport platform (see "Infinera debuts DTN-X packet-optical transport platform with 500G PIC, OTN/MPLS support"), Infinera (NASDAQ: INFN) also announced last Thursday that it has upgraded its flagship DTN platform with new 40- and 100-Gbps capabilities.

The upgrades include new 40 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) and 100GbE service interfaces. The DTN also can now be fitted with DWDM line-cards that support serial 40-Gbps coherent transport. Infinera demonstrated the 40-Gbps coherent capabilities last Thursday as part of its DTN-X demonstration. The company showed one of the DTN-X 500-Gbps superchannels running alongside a 40-Gbps wavelength generated by a DTN.

Infinera sources told Lightwave that the company already has orders for the 40-Gbps line card and expects to recognize revenue from them in the fourth quarter.

One upgrade that you won’t see on the DTN is the addition of the 500-Gbps photonic integrated circuit (PIC) at the heart of the DTN-X. The DTN’s backplane won’t support the capacity the 500G PIC enables, the Infinera sources said.
