Amsterdam Internet Exchange deploys metro 100 Gbps from ADVA Optical Networking

This is the first customer ADVA has announced for its metro-focused 100-Gbps approach, which is available as a line card for its FSP 3000 platform (see “ADVA Optical Networking offers cost-reduced 100-Gbps for metro networks”). Rather than use the dual-polarization quadrature phase-shift keying (DP-QPSK) with coherent detection common for long-haul 100-Gbps applications, ADVA transmits four channels of 28 Gbps each using optical duo-binary modulation. The direct-detection approach is significantly less expensive than DP-QPSK and coherent detection, ADVA asserts, while still meeting metro requirements (see “ADVA talks metro 100G” on the Lightwave Channel).

The company says that AMS-IX ran the technology through several tests, both at ADVA’s facility in Meiningen, Germany, and in a live testbed. AMS-IX came away convinced that the technology would meet its expanding bandwidth needs.

"We are experiencing exponential growth in data transported over the exchange platform," said Henk Steenman, CTO at AMS-IX. "We expect that this growth will continue in the next three years. To accommodate this development we are expanding and upgrading the core of our network. Upgrades will be based on new 100G technology and ADVA Optical Networking provides us with a 100G optical network solution to be used in the Amsterdam metro area."

"Today's networks are undergoing a radical transformation," commented Christoph Glingener, CTO at ADVA Optical Networking. "The demand for 100G technology is growing rapidly, especially as 10G density reaches capacity. Service providers need to ensure they can respond to customers' data demands and do so effectively. This is particularly true in the metro. Our direct detection 100G Metro solution is the first of its kind to do exactly this."
