Ciena Corp. (NASDAQ: CIEN) says that it will supply its 6500 packet-optical platform, equipped with WaveLogic Coherent Optical Processors, for the Janet6 next-generation research and education (R&E) network in the United Kingdom. The upgrade from SuperJanet5 to Janet6 should be completed by October 2013.

The Janet network supports the connectivity and communications needs of the UK’s research and education community via its Lightpath Service. The infrastructure supports more than 18 million users and connects UK universities, further education colleges, research councils, specialist colleges and community learning providers as well as the national school network.

The operators of the Janet R&E network have tinkered with 100 Gbps for some time, including working with Verizon to test drive 100-Gbps capabilities (see “JANET(UK), Verizon collaborate on 100-Gbps networking” and “Verizon Business completes 100G trial with U.K. research and education network”). The current network upgrade will not only provide more efficient 100-Gbps capabilities, but set up the network for future expansion to 400 Gbps, Ciena says. Ciena also will supply a variety of services, including network design, installation, technical and operational support, as well as network maintenance for a five-year period.

“Effectively supporting ground-breaking research in the UK as well as international projects, a world leading education sector, and closer links to industry requires a state-of-the art network with the power to catalyse innovation and collaboration amongst our customers,” said Jeremy Sharp, Head of Strategic Technologies at Janet. “With Ciena’s pioneering coherent technology and extensive expertise in the research and education sector, Janet’s users will have access to a highly reliable and flexible 100G network that will reach the 400G milestone as requirements evolve.”
