Huawei says it used a recent two-day seminar in Bern, Switzerland to reveal a new 100-Gbps optical module based on second-generation soft-decision forward error correction (SD-FEC) technology.

The new coherent transmission based module benefits from new chip technology and what Huawei asserts is the highest integration in the industry. The module can achieve “the same transmission performance as 10G, while using significantly less power,” Huawei added via a press release. The module also will support transmission distances of 4000 km without electrical regeneration.

The module also is compatible with 400-Gbps transmission technology, Huawei adds. The company also showed off the 2-Tbps prototype that was used in a field trial with Vodafone (see “Huawei tests 2Tbps superchannels over Vodafone’s network”).

Meanwhile, Huawei also used the conference, which representatives from more than 80 operators from more than 30 countries and regions around the world attended, to discuss optical communications trends. Conference participants heard that this year will see 100G more widely deployed in backbone fiber-optic networks and OTN will extend from the metro layer to the network edge, for example.

Participants also agreed that this year should be better for fiber-optic network deployments than 2012. Recovery in the global economy and continuing broadband network build outs were seen as catalysts for this optimism.
