Netia jumps to 100G in Poland with Nokia Siemens Networks

In what may be the company’s last customer announcement before its optical transport equipment group becomes Coriant (see “Ex-NSN optical division anticipates new start as Coriant”), Nokia Siemens Networks says that Netia S.A. of Poland’s is using the hiT 7300 DWDM platform with 100 Gigabit Ethernet (100GbE) optical transponders to offer 100-Gbps wavelength services.

In what may be the company’s last customer announcement before its optical transport equipment group becomes Coriant (see “Ex-NSN optical division anticipates new start as Coriant”), Nokia Siemens Networks says that Netia S.A. of Poland’s is using the hiT 7300 DWDM platform with 100 Gigabit Ethernet (100GbE) transponders to offer 100-Gbps wavelength services.

The 100GbE optical transponders are necessary because Netia required that the 100G wavelengths travel over an existing network that used equipment not from Nokia Siemens Networks.

Nokia Siemens Networks said in the press release announcing the deployment that Netia made the jump to 100 Gbps from 2.5 Gbps. However, a blog on Netia’s website asserts (in Polish) the alternative carrier had already deployed 40-Gbps technology as well.

Regardless, the new 100G capabilities significantly increase network capacity. “With this upgrade, we can transmit over a single fiber the capacity required for more than 800,000 broadband service customers to be connected simultaneously to the Internet,” said Marek Owczarski, technology development manager at Netia. “We strive to deliver the most advanced services to our customers. Our preferred partner, Nokia Siemens Networks, is instrumental to that objective as it has the crucial understanding of our system’s requirements and roadmaps.”

According to the blog, Netia has used the 100G optical transmission capabilities to link Cisco CRS-3 routers within Warsaw and on a route between Warsaw and Łódź. The carrier plans to add another 100G link in Warsaw to connect Carrier Ethernet routers.
