Norwegian Ethernet optical transport platform startup TransPacket AS has joined the SyncWorld Ecosystem Program of Symmetricom, Inc. (NASDAQ: SYMM). The move clears a path for TransPacket to the mobile backhaul market through support of timing and synchronization provided via Symmetricom’s products.

TransPacket's uses what it calls “Fusion Networking,” reminiscent of statistical multiplexing, to increase the capacity of fiber-optic networks by injecting Ethernet packets into underused wavelengths. These “virtual wavelengths” enable circuit-switched-like performance for Ethernet networks with high quality-of-service (QoS) requirements. The result is an “Integrated Hybrid Optical Network” that combines packet and circuit-switched properties. The company’s first product, the TransPacket FUSION Ethernet H1 node, is currently in trials.

The startup qualified for the partnership program by validating its ability to provide synchronization distribution through transparent tunneling of IEEE 1588 packets with fixed delay through a network of 10 TransPacket Ethernet H1 nodes.

"By joining the Symmetricom SyncWorld Program, our goal is to bring synchronization to a new level of flexibility in networks that depend on precise timing," said Steinar Bjørnstad, CEO of TransPacket. "We look forward to jointly delivering solutions with Symmetricom that meet the timing and synchronization requirements in 4G/LTE networks, as well as energy and utility grid network infrastructures."

"We are excited to have TransPacket join the SyncWorld Ecosystem Program and support interoperability across all the elements of the mobile value chain," said Manish Gupta, vice president of marketing and business development for Symmetricom. "Predictable network delay is critical to delivering high quality of services and operators benefit from availability of such interoperability."
