Packet-optical networking specialist Transmode says it has expanded its EMXP Ethernet Muxponder line with the enhanced EMXP IIe platforms. The EMXP IIe units add optional Optical Transport Network (OTN) capabilities to all 10-Gbps ports as well as optional standard and enhanced forward error correction (FEC).

The EMXP IIe enables operators to span greater distances and tighten integration with OTN core networks as well as Ethernet and MPLS core networks. The increased switching capabilities should benefit the delivery of business Ethernet services that demand a large number of services per device, Transmode says.

The new Ethernet Muxponders can coexist with the fielded EMXP II systems. They use the same software suite as the original EMXP II units, which means they support such features such as MPLS-TP, IGMPv3, and all the Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF) defined Carrier Ethernet 2.0 (CE2.0) services.

"Transmode's Native Packet Optical architecture has proven to be highly popular with our customer base and Transmode is a leader in Metro-Edge Packet-Optical systems, with industry analysts Infonetics Research placing the company fourth globally and second in EMEA in the category," said Sten Nordell, Transmode's CTO. "The new EMXP IIe units are a key development in our solutions and will greatly extend the range of capabilities available to these customers allowing them to create the most advanced networks and services."

In addition to the support of Ethernet services, Transmode envisions the EMXP IIe assisting in mobile backhaul and video distribution. The new EMXP IIe is initially available with twenty-two 1G and four 10G ports or twelve 10G ports and provide a roadmap to 100G Layer 2 Ethernet Muxponder capabilities.
