BTI Systems says that Equinix, Inc. (Nasdaq: EQIX), the global interconnection and data center network operator, has deployed BTI's 7000 Series packet optical transport platforms to interconnect data centers in Singapore.

This is BTI's first announced host/colocation/exchange customer, but not its only one, say company sources.

Equinix operates International Business Exchange (IBX) data centers in 31 markets across 15 countries in the Americas, EMEA, and Asia-Pacific. The Singapore data centers provide over 347,000 sq. ft. of colocation space with access to top Singapore and global markets. The sources at the optical transport systems vendor say they expect Equinix will deploy BTI gear in at least some of the other 30 markets as well.

"Housing the widest selection of international and regional networks, our data centers in Singapore provide access to one of the world's three GRX peering points and the largest Internet exchange point in South-East Asia," said Equinix director of network engineering and operations, APAC Raphael Ho. "Our customers include major financial institutions and network and cloud providers that rely on our data centers to support their operations. To meet strong demand from these customers, we continue to improve our data center interconnection services. BTI offered us an integrated multilayer solution with higher density and more capacity, simplified operations, and a seamless migration path to 100G."

Equinix has deployed BTI's Data Center Interconnect product line, including the BTI 7000 Series, to support 10-Gbps links now, with the expectation of moving to 100 Gbps in the future, concur. The sources also expect that Equinix will deploy BTI’s recently announced 7800 Series Intelligent Cloud Connect platform when it becomes available later this year (see “Intelligent Cloud Connect from BTI Systems targets SDN-enabled cloud services”).

In addition to the hardware, BTI also is supplying its proNX management and control software. BTI will provide BTI ServiceLink Support Services as well, including an Advanced Replacement program, to ensure efficient deployment and assist with uninterrupted operation of Equinix's network.

Some of the key benefits Equinix says it has achieved by deploying BTI solutions for interconnecting its Singapore data centers include: 20% more capacity by delivering 96 channels per fiber pair; 35% in space saving with the smallest footprint per 10G wave; 15% reduction in power consumption; elimination of the cost of an optical transponder through an integrated packet optical approach; reduction of training costs and increased Quality of Service through converged packet optical layers in a single platform and a future-proof solution that can move seamlessly from 10G to 100G.
