Huawei Marine Networks Co., Ltd. says that Bahamas Telecommunications Co. (BTC) has selected Huawei Marine’s Optix BWS 1600S platform to upgrade the Bahamas Domestic Submarine Network International (BDSNi).

BDSNi links more than 20 sites between Bahamas and Haiti and stretches across about 3500 km, with the longest section of 343 km. The fiber-optic cable system has played an important role in ensuring a robust telecommunications network and has met the expanding requirements of e-commerce, e-education, e-trade, and e-government on these islands, according to the company.

The upgrade will provide 640 Gbps of capacity on the fiber-optic network through the application of enhanced Raman amplification technology, enabling BDSNi to deliver more flexible and cost-effective services. The connectivity and ability to implement new services between the main islands of Bahamas and Haiti will provide a future-proof platform and enable capability to service expanding regional demand, says Hauwei Marine. The application of the Optix BWS 1600S with in-service upgrades and compact footprint will also provide further operational benefits.

Nigel Bayliff, CEO of Huawei Marine, said, “With our equipment and technology, our customers are provided with a comprehensive and cost-effective undersea solution that enables scalable, high-speed bandwidth service delivery using existing fiber optic cables.”
