XO Communications says that it acquired $500 million in funding to support the expansion of its nationwide U.S. network. The expansion will extend the reach and capabilities of its infrastructure to address growing demands from its customers in the areas unified communications, data networking, and multi-cloud applications.

"XO Communications is planning robust investments in our award-winning network to ensure that our customers can take full advantage of the latest end-to-end communication services available," said Chris Ancell, CEO of XO Communications. "As unified communications, mobility, and cloud initiatives become more critical to the success of our customers, XO is further enriching our private network in order to deliver a superior end-to-end customer experience, leveraging the latest fiber-optic technologies, resulting in alternate choices, higher bandwidth availability, and more competitive pricing options to benefit our customers."

XO Communications’ fiber-optic network includes metro, inter-city, and global assets. The service provider embarked on an upgrade to 100 Gbps in 2012 using equipment from Coriant (then Nokia Siemens Networks) and Ciena (see “XO Communications chooses Nokia Siemens Networks for nationwide 100G network” and “XO Communications adds Ciena to 100-Gbps roster”). It also turned to Transmode for metro network systems (see “XO Communications upgrades metro network capacity with Transmode”).
