International communications carrier and fiber-optic network services provider SEACOM has deployed DTN-X packet-optical transport systems from Infinera (NASDAQ: INFN) in its African terrestrial networks, the optical transport systems vendor says.

International communications carrier and fiber-optic network services provider SEACOM has deployed DTN-X packet-optical transport systems from Infinera (NASDAQ: INFN) in its African terrestrial networks, the optical transport systems vendor says.

"The need for bandwidth in Africa is growing substantially and SEACOM's network is ready to address this increase in demand for our customers," said Claes Segelberg, CTO at SEACOM. "The Infinera Intelligent Transport Network enables SEACOM to offer 100-Gbps services and provides us with the ability to offer higher-speed services to accommodate existing customers and attract new customers."

SEACOM was established in 2007 by a group of African investors with the objective of bringing the global Internet to Africa. The service provider has since expanded to create a global footprint, largely consisting of submarine cable systems that link Africa to Europe, Asia, and the Middle East (see, for example, “Seacom and Tyco Telecommunications complete Phase 1 of SEA Cable System”). Its undersea cable and terrestrial networks comprise 17,000 km of infrastructure.

The service provider has been working with Infinera for some time (see “SEACOM demos 100-Gbps via Infinera 500-Gbps PIC”). The DTN-X deployments are part of an overall upgrade of SEACOM’s network (see “SEACOM boosts African Internet with submarine network upgrade”).

"SEACOM's deployment of an Infinera Intelligent Transport Network solution substantially increases the capacity available for Internet and global communications services as the company addresses the growing need for bandwidth in Africa," said Chris Champion, senior vice president, EMEA sales. "We are honored to work with SEACOM to deploy the DTN-X platform. This network upgrade continues our longstanding relationship with SEACOM and reflects positively on the success of SEACOM's prior deployment of the Infinera DTN."

Want to learn more about packet-optical transport innovation? Attend the Lightwave Optical Innovation Summit
The Lightwave Optical Innovation Summit will feature panels and presentations that will illuminate where optical innovation is required in carrier and enterprise/data center networks, what it should look like, and when it might appear. A wide range of experts from the user, technology development, academic, and analyst communities will offer their views on innovation in a variety of areas, including packet-optical transport. Find out more about the Summit, which will be held in Austin, TX, July 14-16, at the Lightwave Optical Innovation Summit website.
