UTStarcom (NASDAQ: UTSI) says that Taiwan's Chunghwa Telecom Co., Ltd. (CHT) has expanded a contract awarded in 2013 for packet optical transport systems. The new systems will support enhancement of Chunghwa Telecom's mobile backhaul network.

UTStarcom will supply its NetRing TN735 packet optical transport platform, which supports optical transmission of legacy TDM and new data services over an all packet transport fiber-optic network. Chunghwa Telecom requires the new systems as it upgrades its 4G LTE mobile infrastructure.

"We are upgrading our LTE network to meet the ever-increasing expectations of our 10 million mobile subscribers," explained Ruei-Chang Hsu, vice president of Chunghwa Telecom. "Having a reliable vendor like UTStarcom with innovative leading-edge products that support our ambitious expansion plan is crucial for us."

"With the deployment of our TN735 and TN703, CHT will be able to launch new service to increasingly more subscribers with high-demand on mobility and provide them with a faster and more reliable mobile experience," said William Wong, UTStarcom's CEO. "Chunghwa Telecom is a very important customer for us, and we value the longstanding partnership with Chunghwa Telecom."

UTStarcom began supplying optical transport equipment to Chunghwa in 2004 (see "UTStarcom signs $21.5 million contract with Chunghwa Telecom in Taiwan for NetRing optical products"). In October 2011, UTStarcom won a multi-service transfer platform (MSTP) and the first packet transport network commercial trial contract from Chunghwa. In October 2012, UTStarcom won an SDH and optical crossconnect network equipment and installation contract from Chunghwa to provide enhanced broadband services, including the NetRing 40K Platform.
