Optical transceiver supplier ColorChip Ltd. has announced a 4x25G QSFP28 optical module that meets both the CLR4 specification and the CWDM4 MSA.

The transceiver supports 100-Gbps optical transmission over singlemode fiber for applications that require reaches between 100 m and 2 km. It leverages the company's proprietary SystemOnGlass technology, which enables wafer-scale, waveguide-in-glass photonic lightwave circuits (PLCs) that can be coupled with fully automated photonic integrated circuits (PICs). The approach eliminates free-space optics to create optical engines with nested multiplexing functionality that can scale to meet increasing data rates with low power and low TCO levels, ColorChip asserts.

As the QSFP28 uses uncooled directly modulated lasers, ColorChip foresees its use in hyper-scale data center, high performance computer (HPC), and enterprise applications. The company will demonstrate the optical transceiver at OFC 2015 by running 100 Gigabit Ethernet traffic in an Arista 7280E Data Center Switch.
