NBN Co adds more Coriant optical transport gear to Australia’s National Broadband Network

NBN Co, the company in charge of deploying Australia's National Broadband Network (NBN), has added a fiber ring in Western Australia to support the project. The fiber-optic network extension leverages Coriant's hiT 7300 Multi-Haul Transport Platform.

NBN Co, the company in charge of deploying Australia's National Broadband Network (NBN; see "NBN Co revises Australian national broadband deployment plans"), has added a fiber ring in Western Australia to support the project. The fiber-optic network extension leverages Coriant's hiT 7300 Multi-Haul Transport Platform.

Coriant earned an optical transport contract from NBN Co for the project when it was still part of Nokia Siemens Networks and has supplied packet-optical transport systems for other parts of the backbone network (see "NBN Co taps Nokia Siemens Networks for Australian NBN DWDM backbone" and "Coriant trials terabit superchannel over Australian NBN"). The company also supplies planning, design, logistics, implementation, and support services for the project.

This latest deployment spans more than 10,000 km. Overall, the NBN fiber cable backbone consumes approximately 60,000 km configured in over 100 fiber rings nationwide.

The hiT 7300 systems will enable NBN Co to scale the backbone to up to 13 Tbps per fiber pair. NBN Co manages the platforms and provisions services via the Coriant Transport Network Management System (TNMS).
