Telecom Italia will embark on a core and metro fiber-optic network upgrade to 100 Gbps using gear from Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU). The systems house says the Italian national service provider is installing the capacity necessary to support future broadband Internet and TV services.

The operator will deploy Alcatel-Lucent's 1830 Photonic Service Switch (1830 PSS) as part of the upgrade. The new optical transport systems will not only increase network capacity, but improve service delivery times through automated service provision. The enhanced network also will ensure high-quality customer experience, Alcatel-Lucent asserts.

Telecom Italia also will use its new resources to provide low-latency services to business customers.
