Telefónica Spain will deploy MX Series 3D Universal Edge Routers from Juniper Networks (NYSE:JNPR) as part of a new metro network infrastructure roll out. The new IP-based metro network will support a variety of fixed and mobile broadband services for business and residential customers.

The network enhancement aims to consolidate Telefónica Spain's wholesale, residential, and business services onto a single IP infrastructure. The network will support such offerings as multicast IPTV, network DVR, catch-up services, fixed and mobile broadband and voice, and Layer 2 and Layer 3 business VPN. It also will be designed to aid in the rapid roll out of new services.

Juniper asserts that the service provider selected the MX Series after "a comprehensive search" for its 80-Tbps capacity as well as its support of software-defined networking (SDN) and network functions virtualization (NFV).

"This partnership with Juniper is a further step in Telefónica's technological transformation strategy," explained Joaquin Mata, CTO at Telefónica Spain. "We are making huge advancements toward our goal to simplify and modernize our network to offer differentiated services that greatly enhance the customer experience. Our new network supported by Juniper Networks will streamline connectivity with a seamless IP path from access to services and cut down the number of hops to traverse. The new network will also be quicker to provision, thereby reducing time-to-service activation and enabling simpler overall operation and maintenance."
