Wave adds metro Ethernet with Layer42 Networks acquisition

Broadband services provider Wave has acquired Layer42 Networks, which provides business-to-business Internet connectivity, colocation, and data transport services to customers in Silicon Valley, San Francisco Bay, and the Mountain View, CA corridor. Terms of the deal for the metro Ethernet services company were not disclosed.

"Layer42 strengthens Wave's physical presence in Silicon Valley and fits perfectly with our accelerated network expansion, while offering business customers best-in-class Internet connectivity and data transport services," said Steve Weed, Wave CEO. "We look forward to investing further in the network infrastructure, people, and technology to further the growth of our business services in the Bay Area and ultimately throughout Wave's network."

Layer42, which Wave describes as "profitable," offers Internet access Ethernet transport, and wavelength transport, with speed offerings ranging from 10 Mbps to 100 Gbps. The company also offered colocation services located in a pair of network operations centers, one in Santa Clara and the other in Mountain View. Combined, the two facilities offer approximately 70,000 square ft of colocation space. The company has approximately 150 customers, including Barracuda Networks, Dropbox, and Square.

Wave says it will invest in additional staff and technology for Layer42, which will now be known as "Layer42 by Wave." Derek Garnier, Layer42 Networks CEO, will join Wave as senior vice president of data center services.

With the new assets, Wave says it now connects more than 50 data centers via its fiber-optic networks in California, Oregon, and Washington. The company recently closed $130 million in financing for its expansion plans (see "Wave funds fiber network expansion").
