RENATER taps Coriant for packet-optical transport

Oct. 30, 2015
Optical transport systems vendor Coriant says it will supply its mTera Universal Transport Platform (UTP) and hiT 7300 Multi-Haul Transport Platform to provide a packet-optical transport upgrade RENATER, the French national research and education (R&E) fiber-optic network provider.

Optical transport systems vendor Coriant says it will supply its mTera Universal Transport Platform (UTP) and hiT 7300 Multi-Haul Transport Platform to provide a packet-optical transport upgrade RENATER, the French national research and education (R&E) fiber-optic network provider.

RENATER connects more than 1,400 sites via 15,000 km of campus, metropolitan, and regional infrastructure. It has 75 points of presence to supply bandwidth and IP services that serve R&E connectivity needs in France, as well as across Europe and the rest of the world.

Coriant said RENATER chose the metro/regional-focused mTera UTP and hiT 7300 because of such features as support of hybrid Optical Transport Network (OTN) and packet switching, flexible protection and restoration, and 100G coherent transmission. The systems house also will supply its Coriant Transport Network Management System (TNMS) for end-to-end network management, as well as network support services such as planning, migration, installation, maintenance, and training.

"Our customers continue to experience increased demand for fast, reliable, and high-capacity connectivity to support a wide range of critical research and education applications, including bandwidth-intensive data transfer, video conferencing, and grid computing," said Patrick Donath, director of RENATER. "In bringing new and more robust capabilities to our underlying transport infrastructure, we were looking for a highly flexible technology solution with the ability to efficiently and cost-effectively meet current as well as future capacity requirements – and Coriant proved the most capable and trusted solutions provider."
