Huawei targets cross-infrastructure gigabit broadband with Any Media Giga Access Platform

Huawei has debuted the Any Media Giga Access Platform, along with an initial customer. As its name implies, the system is designed to support gigabit broadband service provision via fiber to the home (FTTH), hybrid fiber/coax (HFC), and (eventually) copper networks, as well as combined fixed and wireless networks.

As its name implies, the system is designed to support gigabit broadband service provision via fiber to the home (FTTH), hybrid fiber/coax (HFC), and (eventually) copper networks, as well as combined fixed and wireless networks.

The systems house cites is individual successes in FTTH, DOCSIS 3.1 trials, and G.fast trials (see, for example, "BT to field trial G.fast fiber to the distribution point technology from Huawei" and "Swisscom reports G.fast field test") as the foundation for the Any Media Giga Access Platform.

In addition to typical triple-play services, Huawei envisions carriers using the system to support smart home, all-fiber campus, U-vMOS monitoring of video viewing quality, virtual access management, and other intelligence services.

Huawei has announced Danish MSO TDC Group (Tele Danmark Communications) as the first announced customer for the Any Media Giga Access Platform. TDC will use the system as part of an upgrade of its HFC network to DOCSIS 3.1 compliance by the end of 2017. Huawei will supply network end point equipment, optical nodes, amplifiers, passive splitters, and engineering services.

"It is the most ambitious and comprehensive upgrades we have ever made in our cable network and at the same time it is one of the largest investments in digital infrastructure we have seen in Denmark,” explained the CEO of TDC Group, Pernille Erenbjerg. "We are opening a high-way for digital entertainment media where only the imagination sets the limits and not the speed.

"Already before the end of 2017, half of all Danish households will have access to 1-Gbps speeds – 10 times faster than the political objectives for the year 2020,” Erenbjerg added.
