DOCOMO PACIFIC Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of NTT DOCOMO, Inc., and NEC Corp. (NEC; TSE: 6701) say they have signed a deal to construct ATISA, a new submarine cable network to connect Guam with the nearby Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands.

NEC will be responsible for deploying ATISA, which will feature six fiber pairs across its approximately 280 km in length. The undersea cable network will connect the islands of Guam, Saipan, Rota, and Tinian. The parties expect NEC to finish deployment in early 2017.

"Today marks the beginning of a new era in communications connectivity between Guam and the CNMI," proclaimed Jonathan Kriegel, president and CEO of DOCOMO PACIFC. "Project ATISA was born out of the collective desire of elected leaders, business owners, and most especially, our customers to bring transformative change to our islands' infrastructure."
