Hutchison Global Communications Led. (HGC), the fixed-line division of Hutchison Telecommunications Hong Kong Holdings Ltd. (HTHKH; SEHK stock code: 215), has deployed Infinera's TM-Series Mobile Fronthaul Solution across Hong Kong, the two parties say. HGC will use the fiber-optic network infrastructure to provide wholesale mobile fronthaul services within the region.

HGC's regional fiber-optic network includes four cross-border routes integrated with three of mainland China's Tier 1 operators. The service provider uses the infrastructure to provide a range of fixed-line telecommunications services locally and overseas.

This includes serving the needs of operators reacting to the rapid deployment of 3G and 4G and the resultant growth of bandwidth demands to the cell tower. Mobile operators such as HGC's sister company 3 Hong Kong seek fiber to the cell tower to support centralized or cloud-RAN architectures.

Infinera's TM-Series Mobile Fronthaul Solution is designed to meet such requirements. The optical transport systems vendor asserts the suite supports all of the Common Public Radio Interface (CPRI) and Open Base Station Architecture Initiative (OBSAI) rates, with HGC's initial services in Hong Kong ranging from 2.5 Gbps to 10 Gbps. HGC also has deployed the transponder-based active option of the portfolio, which is designed to support mobile fronthaul services with high bandwidth, low latency, and superior synchronization performance.

"We considered the mobile fronthaul solutions in the market and concluded that the Infinera TM-Series solution best enables HGC to deliver massive bandwidth with low latency, while being adaptive to the evolution of mobile technology," said Byron Chiang, CTO of HGC. "The Infinera team was highly responsive, able to deliver quickly and implement services required by us."
