West Coast fiber-optic network and data center services provider Wilcon has expanded its Metro Ethernet capabilities with the help of network engineering, implementation, and support services provider LightRiver Technologies, Inc. The upgrade to Wilcon's 3,000-mile fiber network leverages the 8700 Packetwave Platform from Ciena Corp. (NYSE:CIEN).

The enhancement of Wilcon's network represents repeat business for LightRiver; the two companies collaborated in 2014 on a network upgrade that also involved Ciena optical transport platforms (see "Wilcon picks Ciena for California fiber-optic network upgrade"). In this instance, the new capabilities enable Wilcon to offer Ethernet switching, up to 100 Gigabit Ethernet, and transport capabilities configured and managed via open software. Wilcon will uses the new capabilities to support such on-demand customer applications as cloud services, streaming media, and content distribution.

"As a fiber optic network operator in Southern California, we are constantly improving our network in ways that will exceed the bandwidth needs of today's data-driven society," states Reginald Scales, senior vice president, sales and marketing at Wilcon. "We are pleased to work once again with our expert and reliable partners, LightRiver and Ciena, in our mission to enhance our Metro Ethernet capabilities. LightRiver's proven network design and deployment services, coupled with Ciena's 8700 platform, help Wilcon rapidly deliver high-capacity services, aggregate users, and provide express connections to key data centers, enterprise locations, and wireless communications sites across our region."
