M-net to deploy G.fast in FTTB applications in Germany

Huawei says it has won a contract from German city network operator M-net to assume sole responsibility for the second phase of a gigabit broadband network deployment. The roll out will include the use of G.fast as an in-building approach to serve residents of multiple dwelling units (MDUs) as part of a fiber to the building (FTTB) architecture.

Huawei says it has won a contract from German city network operator M-net to assume sole responsibility for the second phase of a gigabit broadband network deployment. The roll out will include the use of G.fast as an in-building approach to serve residents of multiple dwelling units (MDUs) as part of a fiber to the building (FTTB) architecture.

The Chinese systems house says its G.fast network equipment will support capacity ranging from 500 Mbps to 1 Gbps. The company did not reveal if those figures represent downstream rates or an aggregate of upstream and downstream transmission rates.

Huawei will supply PON optical line terminals for the fiber portion of the network, as well as G.fast distributed point units (DPUs), and G.fast customer-premises equipment (CPE). The infrastructure will support in reverse power feeding or AC power.

"The decision for Huawei was an easy one, thanks to our successful previous cooperation with Huawei on the GPON technology. We intend to strengthen our market leadership in Bavaria, Germany with this new technology," said Jens Prautzsch, M-net CEO.

Huawei says the deployment marks the first use of G.fast in a German commercial application. The company also is active with BT and Swisscom on G.fast deployment (see "BT connects first G.fast trial customers" and "Swisscom reports G.fast field test").
