Huawei Marine Networks Co. Ltd. and Belize Telemedia Ltd. (BTL) will collaborate on deployment of a new undersea cable system. The submarine network system, named Strategic Evolution Underwater Link (SEUL), will connect Belize and San Pedro Island as a key piece inBTL's strategy to modernize its mobile and landline network.

The SEUL cable will span 24 km and deliver a design capacity of 40 channels at 100 Gbps per fiber over eight-fiber pairs, resulting in up to 32 Tbps capability to accommodate future capacity upgrades. The project is scheduled to start this summer and finish during the second quarter of next year.

In addition to the submarine cable network, BTL's modernization project includes deploying 4G LTE mobile service and fiber to residential and business buildings in San Pedro, Belize's largest and fastest-growing tourist area.

"We have made it our mission to put Belize in the top three in the region in terms of connectivity and broadband speeds," says Anwar Barrow, chairman of the BTL Executive Committee. "The Strategic Evolution Underwater Link is another step in achieving our goal, along with the buildout of nationwide 4G LTE."
