EFFECT Photonics demos 500-Gbps PAM4 TOSA

Sept. 19, 2016
EFFECT Photonics says it has developed a transmit optical subassembly (TOSA) using its optical system-on-a-chip technology that will support transmission of 500 Gbps via PAM4 up to 75 km. The company says it has developed the device in collaboration with the Technical University of Eindhoven; further advances are on the way, the company adds.

The device, which targets data center interconnect and other metro access applications, features multiple DBR lasers, low-voltage drive Mach-Zehnder modulators, arrayed waveguide grating, and wavelength monitoring capability. EFFECT Photonics is demonstrating the device this week at ECOC 2016 in Dusseldorf, Germany.

Eindhoven-based EFFECT Photonics focuses on photonic integration in indium phosphide (InP). It introduced 100-Gbps optical transceivers that support 10x10-Gbps transmission this past March (see "EFFECT Photonics offers 100G transceivers based on InP photonic integration").
