UAE's du tests TWDM-PON

Nokia says that UAE-based service provider du has completed successful lab tests of the company's time and wavelength-division multiplexing PON (TWDM-PON) technology. TWDM-PON is the basis of NG-PON2, the next-generation PON technology and specification set that will support four wavelengths of symmetrical 40 Gbps. Additional wavelengths could be added in the future.

Nokia says that UAE-based service provider du has completed successful lab tests of the company's time and wavelength-division multiplexing PON (TWDM-PON) technology (see "Alcatel-Lucent lowers entry cost of TWDM-PON with Universal TWDM"). TWDM-PON is the basis of NG-PON2, the next-generation PON technology and specification set that will support four wavelengths of symmetrical 40 Gbps. Additional wavelengths could be added in the future.

du currently offers gigabit broadband services in the UAE. The addition of TWDM-PON to its network could enable a single optical line terminal (OLT) port to serve a greater number of gigabit customers; alternatively, TWDM-PON could enable du to offer multi-gigabit broadband services efficiently.

We are confident that our cooperation will take the country's journey toward IoT [Internet of Things] and smart cities to the next level."

Nokia points out that du is the strategic partner of Smart Dubai for the Smart Dubai Platform. The service provider will develop and implement the Smart Dubai Platform, which aims to provide "smart cities" capabilities. TWDM-PON technology could prove useful in such an endeavor.
