Verizon launches Fios service in Boston

Following the announcement that it had partnered with the city government to deploy fiber to the premises (FTTP) throughout Boston, Verizon says that its Fios triple-play services are now available in parts of Dorchester, Roslindale and West Roxbury. The premium service tier includes symmetrical 500-Mbps internet.

Following the announcement that it had partnered with the city government to deploy fiber to the premises (FTTP) throughout Boston (see "Verizon to bring FiOS FTTP network to Boston" and "Verizon sets first Boston FTTP deployments"), Verizon says that its Fios triple-play services are now available in parts of Dorchester, Roslindale and West Roxbury. The premium service tier includes symmetrical 500-Mbps internet.

The three neighborhoods are the first to benefit from the $300 million fiber-optic network rollout. Verizon says that it will connect Roxbury's Dudley Square Innovation District before the end of the year, while its service footprint will expand "street-by-street, week-by-week" in Dorchester, Roslindale, West Roxbury, and parts of Roxbury in 2017. Verizon says it has deployed more than 160 miles of fiber throughout the city so far.

"Beginning today Verizon brings Fios, competition, and choice to the first neighborhoods of Boston," said Ken Dixon, leader of Verizon's consumer landline business. "By the end of December, more than 25,000 addresses will be able to order Fios."

Meanwhile, the service provider is following through on an agreement reached in November to conduct a trial of smart communities technology at the intersection of Mass Avenue and Beacon Street. Construction is currently underway to install new traffic signals, lighting, and video "solutions" which provide integrated data to city planners and engineers via Verizon's fiber-optic network. This proof-of-concept pilot is expected to become operational later this year.
