ViaWest says it plans to offer access to the New Cross Pacific submarine cable system at its Brookwood Data Center in Hillsboro, OR, when the undersea cable network opens for service late this year. As the data center is part of the Hillsboro Data Center Ring, the company also will provide cross-connects to the subsea cable from four other data centers on the ring.

The New Cross Pacific submarine cable network is designed to provide as much as 80 Tbps of low-latency capacity between the East Asia and the U.S. Northwest. Owned by a consortium of seven companies -- including Microsoft as well as China Mobile, China Telecom, China Unicom, Chunghwa Telecom, KT Telecom, and Softbank, according to press reports – the submarine cable system will land at mainland China, South Korea, Taiwan, and Japan as well as the Brookwood Data Center.

"ViaWest is pleased to offer a direct connection to the newest undersea cable of its kind to businesses in the U.S. seeking high speed access to Asia and vice versa," said Tim Parker, vice president of network services at ViaWest. "Most existing undersea cables are at full capacity. This provides a new, optimized route, or potentially a redundant route, for companies that require additional capacity."

"This service is available not only to ViaWest clients but also to those of other Hillsboro-area data centers," added Bill Cory, ViaWest regional vice president. "As a member of the Hillsboro Data Center Ring, ViaWest will offer metro cross-connects to the NCP cable from four other data centers on the Ring. Likewise, our access to the Ring enables ViaWest to offer direct access to hyperscale public cloud solutions. Through the NCP cable connection and Hillsboro Data Center Ring membership, we believe that our Brookwood Data Center is among the most connected data centers in the U.S."
