1&1 Versatel chooses Coriant mTera switching and transport platform for German backbone network

Aug. 8, 2017
Optical transport systems provider Coriant says it has supplied its mTera universal switching and transport platform to German provider 1&1 Versatel for enhancing its fiber-optic backbone network. Encompassing more than 42,000 km, the 1&1 Versatel nationwide fiber-optic network is the second largest in Germany, and supports business and residential communications services, including data transfer of speeds up to 100G, upgradable to 200G.

Optical transport systems provider Coriant says it has supplied its mTera universal switching and transport platform to 1&1 Versatel to enhance German service provider’s fiber-optic backbone network. Encompassing more than 42,000 km, the 1&1 Versatel nationwide fiber-optic network is the second largest in Germany, and supports business and residential communications services, including data transfer of speeds up to 100G, upgradable to 200G.

A data, internet, and voice services provider, 1&1 Versatel has already deployed the mTera platform in major German backbone sites, according to Coriant. The provider also plans to deploy it to regional fiber optic networks to increase its fiber-optic assets use, and to provide more scalable, flexible broadband services.

Coriant says the mTera transport platform's OTN switching and end-to-end network management will enable 1&1 Versatile to meet growing customer demand for network bandwidth, while improving federal republic service delivery. According to Coriant, the mTera's compact form factor supports 7 Tbps of universal switching capacity per shelf, with up to 12 Tbps of total, and will provide 1&1 Versatel a scalable foundation.

"Access to reliable and scalable broadband services in the gigabit age is a catalyst for economic growth and competitive differentiation for companies both large and small," said Dr. Jürgen Hernichel, 1&1 Versatel's chief executive officer. "With the ability to efficiently manage high-speed service traffic and deploy capacity quickly, the Coriant solution will allow us to keep pace with our customers' bandwidth demands and deliver the advanced services that help them become more competitive in the market."

1&1 Versatel will use the mTera platform to aggregate, groom, and route a variety of traffic types, while supporting migration of legacy traffic, including SDH, Coriant says. Coriant's management platform, the Transport Network Management System (TNMS), will provide service capacity provisioning and management in 1&1 Versatel's backbone.

First introduced by Coriant in 2014, the mTera transport platform is designed to be flexible and dense enough to support a wide range of packet optical transport applications, including metro-to-long-haul gateway applications and on-demand data center connectivity.
