Australia Singapore Cable deployment reportedly ahead of schedule

Vocus, which backs the deployment of the Australia Singapore Cable, reported during its earning report last week that the project it ahead of schedule. The submarine cable system deployment, originally scheduled to conclude September 2018, now appears to be in line for a July 2018 delivery. "We've been able to achieve the earlier date through condensing the program of works to deliver ahead of schedule, in July 2018," stated Vocus Group CEO Geoff Horth, "The Vocus and Alcatel build teams are familiar with each other having worked together on the successful delivery of our North West Cable System, which has facilitated the shorter timeframe for completion."

As its name states, the undersea cable network will link Singapore and Australia (specifically, Perth). The cable also will land in Jakarta as well as Christmas Island along the way. It also will link to the NorthWest Cable System. The 4,600-km submarine cable system will feature four fiber pairs and an initial design capacity of 40 Tbps, with support of 100-Gbps wavelengths. The Australia Singapore Cable networkwill offer approximately 30% less latency from Sydney to Singapore compared to existing routes, the project's organizers assert.

"The ASC establishes a new global route from South East Asia – the Great Southern Route, avoiding geographic instability around Japan and geopolitical challenges in Guam and the South China Sea, to provide a safer route to the US thus opening up the cable to new markets," said Horth.
