Equinix, Inc. (Nasdaq: EQIX) says it has opened the SV10 International Business Exchange(IBX) data center in Silicon Valley at its Great Oaks campus in San Jose. The $122 million SV10 facility is the 13th Equinix now operates in Silicon Valley.
Representing what the company asserts is the second-largest internet exchange point in North America, the Equinix Silicon Valley data centers serve more than 625 customers. Equinix has made a nearly $400 million investment in the local economy with the addition of SV10, and says it has additional land in the area for future expansion.
Through interconnection, the Equinix facilities enable network and content providers, cloud and IT service providers, and enterprise customers to efficiently exchange business data with customers and partners. Equinix's SV10 facility provides additional capacity to meet increasing interconnection demands, multi-cloud deployments, and connectivity to network and content services, says Equinix.
Customers in SV10 can select from a range of network services from over 125 providers, and cloud services including AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud Platform, Oracle Cloud, and others through the Equinix Cloud Exchange and direct connect services. According to Equinix, customers in the seven other Equinix Silicon Valley IBX data centers can also connect with each other through low-latency dark fiber links between the sites by using Equinix Metro Connect.
The initial phase of SV10 will add more than 37,000 square feet (over 3,400 square meters) of colocation space, offering campus cross-connectivity into SV1 and SV5, and including space for 930 cabinets. Equinix says it is planning two more expansion phases, and the facility will provide capacity for 2,820 cabinets at full build.
SV10 is a LEED Silver Certified building, meeting water reduction standards. Equinix says SV10 will feature indirect evaporative cooling (IDEC) technology to minimize water use; hot aisle containment; rooftop solar and fuel cells for sustainable energy production; and accessibility to and from public transportation. Equinix says it intends to use 100% clean and renewable energy for its global platform, and continue designing, building, and operating its data centers to meet high energy-efficiency standards.
The opening of SV10 is part of the company's expansion, which includes its acquisition of 29 data centers and their operations from Verizon Communications Inc. earlier this year (see "Equinix completes Verizon data center buy").
