DE-CIX and Interwire, a local Indian technology group that operates the Mumbai Internet Exchange (IX), have followed up on a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed earlier this year and created a joint venture that will provide international IX services to the Indian market. The services include carrier and data center neutral interconnection services via DE-CIX's network of exchanges. The joint venture, called DE-CIX Interwire India plc, will operate under the "Mumbai IX powered by DE-CIX" brand.

DE-CIX sees the joint venture as a natural extension of its global IX footprint, which now numbers 12 IX facilities (see, for example "DE-CIX records 5 Tbps in peak traffic at Frankfurt Internet exchange" and "DE-CIX launches new internet exchange in Dallas"), as well as its business model. "We carefully analyzed the Indian market for partners who have the same spirit and growth ambitions as DE-CIX has. In Interwire, we are sure that we have found the right company - an internet exchange, which is also able to pursue our carrier and data center neutral strategy," said DE-CIX CEO Harald A. Summa. "We are aiming to nearly double the number of connected ASNs by the end of the year. Mumbai IX powered by DE-CIX will bring markets and networks together."

"With our entry into the second largest Internet market worldwide, we see major business and growth opportunities," added Ivo Ivanov, chief strategic officer at DE-CIX. "Our own market analysis and expert's opinions see India and especially Mumbai as the digital place-to-be when it comes to data transit and traffic. With close to 23 million inhabitants, major sea cable connections, a leading harbor and excellent airport facilities, the metro market of Mumbai is offering us a once in a lifetime chance to establish our business in this region."
