Equinix, Inc. (Nasdaq: EQIX), says it has purchased the Zenium data center in Istanbul from the existing shareholders in an all-cash transaction for $93 million. The company also revealed that it has closed its 215 million euro (approximately $259 million) purchase of Itconic from the Carlyle Group.
Signed and completed on October 6, 2017, the Zenium acquisition will expand Equinix's ability to provide secure, direct connectivity to Turkish businesses looking to expand their global market reach. The purchase includes three buildings and land, Equinix says. The data center building is partially fitted out, and the other two buildings are shell and core, and prepared for data center fit out.
The Zenium data center, which produces annualized revenues of about $2.5 million, will be renamed Equinix IS2. The IS2 data center will equip Equinix with 1,500 square meters of colocation space, with the potential for a 12,000 square-meter expansion, and up to 22 MW of critical customer load at full build.
Currently operating the IS1 facility in Istanbul, the company says IS2 will provide Equinix the capacity and future campus expansion opportunities necessary for it to meet Turkey's growing demand for colocation and interconnection services. Presently there are 10 networks at the IS2 data center, including Turk Telecom, that deliver network options to multinationals, hyperscalers, and IT vendors.
Meanwhile, Equinix first announced its intention to acquire Itconic, a data center, connectivity, and cloud infrastructure services provider in Spain and Portugal, and CloudMas, an Itconic subsidiary that supports enterprise adoption and use of cloud services, in September (see "Equinix to buy Itconic and CloudMas, expand footprint in Europe"). Equinix receives five data centers spread among Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, and Lisbon. The buy, which closed October 9, enables the company to expand its Platform Equinix services into Iberia.
Equinix now operates more than 185 IBX data centers in 48 markets.
