Vogel Telecom builds fiber backbone network across Brazil

Coriant says it has supplied integrated Optical Transport Network (OTN) switching and optical transport systems to Vogel Telecom of Brazil. The carrier's carrier has used the optical networking hardware to create a nationwide fiber backbone network that will support the delivery of OTN, Ethernet, MPLS-TP, and SDH services. The fiber-optic network construction includes metro to long haul network infrastructure.

Coriant says it has supplied integrated Optical Transport Network (OTN) switching and optical transport systems to Vogel Telecom of Brazil. The carrier's carrier has used the optical networking hardware to create a nationwide fiber backbone network that will support the delivery of OTN, Ethernet, MPLS-TP, and SDH services. The fiber-optic network construction includes metro to long haul network infrastructure.

The project, performed in collaboration with strategic partner Logicalis, is an extension of a contract originally signed at the end of 2016, Coriant says.

Vogel Telecom's national fiber project includes more than 21,000 km of fiber and connects more than 600 cities in 13 Brazilian states and the Federal District of Brasília. The national backbone segment extends more than 4,000 km to connect the States of Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, Paraná, São Paulo, Minas Gerais, and Rio de Janeiro. Vogel has increased its footprint in São Paulo and Belo Horizonte and added Rio de Janeiro to its market roster as part of the deployment. The new fiber network supports up to 5 Tbps of capacity, with an upgrade path to 10 Tbps, Coriant says.

"After rigorous evaluation of our options, Coriant was the clear choice. The company's end-to-end packet optical transport solutions demonstrated best-in-class performance, and working closely with Logicalis, they offered a solution cost-optimized for our current and future needs."

Coriant says it supplied its Coriant 7100 Pico Packet Optical Transport Platform for the metro access parts of the upgrade, the Coriant mTera Universal Transport Platform for service aggregation and OTN switching requirements, and the Coriant hiT 7300 Multi-Haul Transport Platform for long-haul coherent DWDM transmission. Vogel Telecom will use the Coriant Transport Network Management System (TNMS) to manage its new assets.
