Zayo receives small cell contract from major wireless carrier

Zayo Group Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: ZAYO) says it has been chosen by what it describes as "a major wireless carrier" for deployment of over 500 small cell sites in "two significant metro areas" it did not further identify. The multimillion-dollar agreement includes small cell siting, placement, and installation, services part of Zayo's turnkey mobile infrastructure line.

Zayo Group Holdings, Inc. The multimillion-dollar agreement includes small cell siting, placement, and installation, services part of Zayo's turnkey mobile infrastructure line.

The small cells are part of the otherwise unidentified carrier's densification strategy for maximizing coverage and capacity in major metro areas, says Zayo. The projects will use Zayo's distributed network of field operations teams, existing pole infrastructure, and established connections with U.S. municipalities.

In January of 2016, Zayo rolled out its fiber-to-the-tower (FTT) fiber-optic network infrastructure to 78 new towers in Indiana to serve the needs of a client Zayo also described as "a major wireless carrier customer" (see "Zayo adds fiber to the tower connections in Indiana"). Zayo says its FTT and small cell platform continue to provide the infrastructure that wireless carriers need for broadening coverage and capacity, a trend that has led to small cells growth over the past year. According to Zayo, the economics of all elements of Zayo's mobile infrastructure deployments have been positively affected by the trend.

"As the wireless industry increases the pace of small cell deployment, we expect to see outsized growth in this area," said Jack Waters, Zayo CTO and president of Fiber Solutions. "With our extensive construction experience and strong jurisdictional relationships, Zayo is well-positioned to provide turnkey small cell infrastructure."
