Tellabs provides passive optical LAN to Dayton hotel

Tellabs says it has partnered with UberData Networks, a full-service network system integration company, to provide a passive optical LAN (POL) for the SpringHill Suites by Marriott in Dayton, OH (Beavercreek).

According to the POL technology provider, Marriott International is a supporter of fiber-to-the-room network designs based on GPON technology. Middletown Hotel Management (MHM) owns and manages the Dayton SpringHill Suites by Marriott, and has installed the Tellabs-enabled passive optical LAN in the 118 guest suite hotel. UberData Networks designed and deployed Tellabs' technology for the deployment.

The small form-factor optical LAN system (OLAN) has the capacity to supply more than 500 ports of Gigabit Ethernet connectivity over single-mode fiber (SMF) cabling using a passive optical distribution network architecture. This optical LAN was designed to converge the hotel's voice, smart IPTV, high-speed Internet, Wi-Fi, and security over a single fiber-based infrastructure.

With the deployment of Tellabs OLAN at SpringHill Suites by Marriott (Beavercreek), three separate networks for voice, data, and video are now converged onto one fiber-optic network to reduce both capital costs and continued operational costs. Telecom rooms have been phased out, and that space repurposed for business and guest service needs, Tellabs says.

For improved end-to-end operational efficiencies, the IT network is now managed from one screen with global policies and the least possible clicks. The OLAN delivers a flexible path to future 10-Gbps technologies and farther, and bandwidth with the fiber-optic cabling is unlimited.

Since the Tellabs OLAN deployment at SpringHill Suites by Marriott (Beavercreek), the hotel has climbed to the top 1% in rankings for all SpringHill Suites by Marriott based on guest experience with network connectivity.

"Our guests love the benefits of this technology," said Bob Ritter, MHM's vice president of operations. "At this property, our customer satisfaction scores are extremely high for high-speed Internet wireless performance and our smart IPTVs, which ranks us in the top 1% of all SpringHill Suites by Marriott."

In February of this year, Tellabs expanded its POL portfolio with the general availability of Software Release (SR) 29.1 (see "Tellabs upgraded its passive optical LAN portfolio with new software, ONTs").

The company's LAN deployment announcement for the Dayton SpringHill Suites follows the news earlier this week that Calix, Inc. has expanded its AXOS systems to help hospitality brands address evolving broadband demands, and further demonstrates the market potential that the emerging hoteliers segment represents (see "Calix expands AXOS PON systems to hoteliers market").
