Nokia says Telenor Group has selected the communications technology vendor to deploy its new optical backbone network that serves Norway and Sweden. Operating in Scandinavia, Eastern Europe, and Asia, the mobile telecommunications company Telenor is replacing its existing optical core network that connects 200 key centers throughout Norway and Sweden with the new optical backbone to establish bandwidth capacity growth, Nokia says.

According to the systems vendor, 5G mobile progress is accelerating multi-terabit capacity demand, which is contributing to growing online video and internet use among customers, and increasing cloud applications use and data center interconnections demand. Nokia will provide its next-generation optical network systems to Telenor to enable dynamic network management and automation and improved flexibility.

The optical network features Nokia's coherent optical transmission technology, and is built on the company's colorless/directionless/contentionless flex-grid (CDC-F) wavelength routing technology (see "Preparing Optical Networks for the 100G Services Era"). The network will become an SDN-ready platform, improving Telenor's ability to automate, optimize, and assure network services efficiently. Nokia says that many operations using its systems have been certified compliant with ISO27001 information security standards, and others have demonstrated satisfactory conformance to the ISO27001 information security standards.

"We are excited to be chosen for this multi-year turnkey project," said Nicolas Almendro, Nokia's head of Europe & MEA Optics business development. "This highly resilient and secure optical backbone will play a critical role in deploying next-generation services to Telenor customers in Norway and Sweden, and help the customer prepare for the demands of 5G."
